Charity

Charity removes Evil, disasters, sickness and unfortunate incidence! The Holy Prophet Mohammed (SAW) has said that : "An act of charity shields seventy dead people from ill fate". The Prophet (SAW) has also said that "The angel of death is told to remove the soul of a person, but if during that time charity is given then the order to remove the soul is cancelled". Imam Jafar Sadiq (A.S.) says that : "An act of charity given openly prevents seventy types of mishaps, and a secretly given charity cools the anger of our Lord Allah (S.W.T.)". The Holy Prophet (SAW) said that : "Allah says that when the angel of death is asked to remove the soul of a person, and if he or she gives Sadaqah, Allah orders the angel of death to stop".

O Allah! Be for your Servant, Hujjat bin Al-Hasan, Your blessings be upon Him and upon His ancestors, in this time and all times, a Master, a Protector, a Leader, a Helper, a Guide and a Guardian, till you make him dwell in Your earth and provide Him with longevity in it.

From the Desk of the President

The Islamic Model of Social Service

Before Islam, various religious communities confined the field of virtue and goodness to the places of worship and the seats of learning. Although the Ja'ffari Muslim Members of Africa, Middle East and Western nations have attained heights in meeting the needs of selective groups through collective institutions, yet, the basic idea behind it has always been the desire for prosperity of piety and economic of the community.

The Islamic model of social service, on the other hand, envisages blessings and mercy on all members of the society and even animals living on the earth. Muslims are required to keep in view only one thing in all good deeds, that is, to seek God's pleasure through sympathy for human beings whether their efforts become known to the people or not. With regard to benevolence, the ultimate objective should be to gain Riza-e-Ilahi (for the sake of God), which is free from a grain of self-boosting and self-aggrandizement. When such measures are undertaken on collective basis, the doors of the institutions so established are open to all and sundry without distinction of nationality language, race or religion.

According to Islam, this world is a preparatory ground for the next. It is here where man has to redeem the goal of his existence. This is not possible without mutual interaction, which entails certain duties. He cannot discharge these duties in the absence of a sincere desire to be serviceable to others. This makes the Islamic concept of philanthropy and love for mankind broader, better defined and more comprehensive in its scope than those of other nations past or present.

By nature man is restive in spending on people with whom he has no direct concern whatsoever. "Why should we part with our hard-earned wealth for others and become paupers ourselves?" is a general notion

(5)

prevailing around. Islam calls to goodness so gracefully that the fear of illiberality, poverty and indigence cannot find place in human psyche. No doubt, good and evil draw us to opposite directions. The contrast is well marked out in acts of welfare. When we think of doing some work of kindness of charity, we are assailed with apprehension of impoverishment. Evil supports any tendency to selfishness, greed of extravagant expenditure for self-indulgence. On the contrary, Allah draws us on to all that is kind and good for therein lie the remission of our sins besides real prosperity and contentment of soul. No generous act can ever ruined any one. It is false generosity, which is sometimes depicted as leading to ruination, because Allah knows our intentions, cares for all, and has everything in His power, it is obvious which course a wise man will choose. Thus, we find that after prompting the believers to spend their substance in the way of God, the Quran assures:

"Satan threatens you with poverty and orders you to commit sins; whereas Allah promises you Forgiveness from Himself and Bounty, and Allah is All-Sufficient for His creatures' needs, All-Knowing." (2:268).

Moreover, charity will save us from evil. As old saying says "A kindness a day keeps the evil away." It also will help our soul elevate to the highest height of spirituality as well as giving us satisfaction of giving.

Therefore, relief may be unhesitatingly given to anyone in distress whether believing or unbelieving. Nobody is to be denied help because of his Faith. This Quranic injunction was addressed to the Holy Prophet (SAW) , but it is of universal application.

Another misgiving associated with social work is that only the moneyed people can perform it. Islam requires every person-high or low, rich or poor, patrician or plebeian -to do good deeds. The rich can serve the fellow beings with their power and pelf. As for the poor, they ought to do well with their hands and tongues. During the Prophet's (SAW) period, some of his companions with limited resources were worried that the rich had excelled them in social service. The Prophet

(6)

(SAW) consoled them that wealth was not the only means of goodness, but anything that could benefit humanity in any manner constituted goodness. He stressed, "Your praise and sanctification of God is also a 'Sadaqah' (freewill offering). Bidding good is a Sadaqah and so is forbidding evil. To remove thorns, stones or anything else from the path of troublesome and the wayfarers is also a Sadaqah. To bring about reconciliation between two (contending) persons is also Sadaqah. And helping a person on to his mount is also a Sadaqah."

There are glaring examples of displaced and isolated families suffering from poverty as a legacy and are reeling under chronic and other diseases, malnutrition and hunger in such adversity that one time bread and tea a day is the whole meal of many children, it is not difficult to comprehend their agony and anxiety, this unfortunates families need no more than means of basic necessities of life and to regain self respect and dignity. The challenge to uplift their status is looming large over us for all to see and respond to.

We have your good wishes without doubt but if the Organization like Qayam Welfare Society could run only on good wishes, then we would not be asking you for anything more. Qayam Welfare Society needs time commitment from you. Funds are the key to any project. Your generosity can change the entire outlook of our project within and overseas.

Message from the Secretary

Qayam Welfare Society is now aiming on a very crucial factor which is to be filled in the vacant niche in offering its services to the forgotten and neglected areas of rural and interior villages, where over 70% of our community is populated out of which only few are engaged in agriculture and related activities and over 80% of work force are employed in skills, semi-skills, or labour related activities where exploitation of female and child (boys & girls) is a surplus yield for the employer. This problem could not be solved even by enforcing ban on child labour, poverty in our community is an axiom even today.

Discrimination does not end here, the number of boys working in domestic industries, 50% of which attend schools and then work part-time, but mostly girls are kept working fulltime and are kept illiterate which only boys get some chance of education, child labour gives parent chance to reduce financial liabilities, a couple with three girls tends to send for work so it may yield some financial remedy for their marriage.

Qayam Welfare Society has located many such villages where mostly Sadat are populated, this area is located approximately 260 Kms. East of Hyderabad, which is called coastal Andhra. This interior area has been taken up on priority basis since it is next to Sea coast and frequently hampered by natural calamities, cyclones and storms, the people of our community therein dwell in thatch houses made of earth, bamboo and palm leaves and are prone to tidal waves and storms and when there is heavy gail and storms all their houses and belongings get washed away leaving them in devastation and miserable plight and for days to come they suffer all the hardship and severity of a miserable life.

Qayam Welfare Society in its endeavour has taken up the task to build re-inforced concrete houses for the misery striken Sadat, detailed report of which follows in this report about financial assistance to start their own trades and arrange for marriage of the deserving Sadat Girls.

Marriage Assistance

On Marriage in Islam

According to the Quranic revelation a marriage alliance between man and woman is one of God's main commandments. The fulfilment of this commandment allows man to reach Divine mercy and welfare, experience the delights and advantages of family life and execute God's injunction on the reproduction of mankind.

On the will of the Creator marriage was preordained to become one of the most significant social institutions in human history. The blessed marriage of the original man, Prophet Adam (peace upon him) and Eve (Hava), who are greatly honoured by Muslims, has proved that at the very beginning of the Creation the Lord attributed an important role to marriage. It was this marriage (the first marriage in history) that was particularly blessed by the Creator, for according to God's decree Adam (peace is upon him) and Eve became the primogenitors of mankind.

Islamic law, based on Divine Revelation of the Holy Quran and the Prophetic tradition (Sunna), defines marriage as a spiritual value and a special treaty, commanded by the Creator. According to the definition marital bonds between man and woman are sacred in the name of God.

"Allah has given you wives from among yourselves, and through them He has granted you sons and grandsons. He has provided you with good things", - reads the Holy Quran (the Holy Quran, 16:72).

The Curse of dowry system

One of the reasons of these social evils is ignorance and non-compliance

(15)

with Islamic teachings and practices. Hundreds and thousands of educated Muslim girls are leading unmarried lives or believe in late marriages. Does it not indicate moral degradation of our society". In a society where this is the case with unmarried girls, who will bother about the marriage of widows and divorcees? The Prophet (SAW) and his companions set examples for their followers by marrying widows and divorcee. Young Muslim girls have to lead unmarried life because of financial difficulties of their parents or because of the non-availability of suitable matches. Their unmarried status creates new problems for them and the society.

Our younger generation should come forward to rectify this trend and reform the society. They should set an example by neither demanding nor offering dowry. Those who demand dowry should be persuaded by explaining to them religious and Quranic commands. If they still persist in their evil demands, they should be socially boycotted. Demanding dowry is a legal offence also. Anti-dowry committees should be set up. This will bring positive results for the unmarried daughters of the poor.

These steps are in accordance with the commands of God and His Prophet. These will create a good society free of evil. Unless the younger generations volunteer for such noble tasks, no reformatory projects can succeed.

Qayam Welfare Society with all its efforts strives to arrange marriages of helpless, poor and orphan girls either individually or collectively mass marriage, by itself arranges the below mentioned articles required for marriages process. In each marriage, an amount of Rs. 20,000/- (Rupees Twenty Thousand Only) is required. Education

Education is a process of grooming and reforming people through proper direction and guidance throughout their lives and fields. The task is especially entrusted to various persons at different stages, therefore education in this context means a process of guiding and building human intellect in order to attain maturity and an ideal stage. Knowledge and information play a role of an engineering design on which people's personalities are based, the culture and information at teachers' hands are in similar design drawing at an Engineer disposal.

As it has been highly emphasized in Islam to seek education to pursue knowledge, everyone has the will but many like in our community lack the choices as their children come from poor socio-economic background, which is easy to comprehend but difficult to describe, as such the capita income of Rs. 600/- per person mostly leave them many a time with empty stomach making the means of basic necessities of house and clothing as their priority to increase their earning while depriving the children of basic education as their children are engaged as servants in eking out a paltry income.

To ensure a poor child education, we earnestly appeal to the kind Donor to kindly sponsor and choose from the below mentioned category.

1. Primary to VII Class Education for one year package for one student which includes school fees, books, uniform & shoes and transportation, comes to Rs. 8000/- per academic year.

2. From Class VIII to Intermediate, Rs. 12000/- per annum towards package.

OUR EDUCATIONAL PROJECT

Houzat - Ul - Imm -Ul - Qayam (A.S.) Ad Diniya

ANNUAL REPORT FOR THE YEAR 2006-07

PRINCIPAL INTRODUCTORY MESSAGE

All praises be to one and only Allah (SWT) with sincere gratitude to Imam-e-Qayam, Qayam Welfare Society is pleased to inform that for Islamic Religious Education, it has commenced the above mentioned Houza which has completed its fifth successful consecutive years of perennial incitement of Islamic ideals and deliberation with illiteracy emancipation as destiny of our children should not be left to be a matter of chance, but it should be matter of choice, literacy and religious deliberation is a must and all time requirement, there are no riches like wisdom and knowledge.

"The Beneficent. He taught the Quran. He created the man. He taught him the explanation." (55 : 1 to 4)

As observed above, Allah the Almighty in these blessed verses, talks about the creation of man and associates the concept of knowledge right from the beginning of creation of humanity.

Knowledge grants such honour to man that he is no longer in need of any other reverence and respect. Why has Islam placed so much stress on knowledge? Among the various critical answers to this question.

For, knowledge is the source of all goodness and the peak of the highest of stations. On the other hand, ignorance is the cause of all evils and problems.

What is the knowledge that has been made obligatory in Islam? Is it the knowledge of history geography, science, mathematics, etc.?

(24)

Or is it something else?

Certainly, when Allah, the Messenger of Islam (S.A.W.A.) and the infallible Imams (a.s.) have made knowledge obligatory on all Muslims, men as well as women, it must not be the aforementioned material science, notwithstanding their importance in the material world. For, it is not possible for everybody to gain or acquire expertise knowledge in these fields. A historian may probably be ignorant of the basic laws of experimental sciences like physics and chemistry. The same holds true for scholars in all fields. Also, these sciences don't contribute to the overall development of a person from all aspects, physical, spiritual, individual and social. The following tradition will convey the concept in a manner most lucid and eloquent.

Imam Kazem (A.S.) narrates that the Messenger of Islam (S.A.W.A.) entered a mosque and saw a large number of people had gathered around a man. He (S.A.W.A.) asked, 'What's going on?' It was told that this man is a scholar. The Prophet (S.A.W.A.) asked, 'Scholar of what?' They replied, 'He is aware of the genealogy of the Arabs, their history, their days of ignorance, their poems and their language.' The Messenger of Islam (S.A.W.A.) reported, "This is such knowledge that the one who is ignorant of it will not be harmed and the one who is aware of it will not benefit from it.

It becomes clear that it is some other knowledge that has been emphasized by Islam in its lofty teachings. From the Quranic verses and traditions, it is known that it is essential for every Muslim to acquire knowledge of the following:

Principles of Religion (Usul al-Deen):

Obviously, it is most important for every Muslim to know that why he is a Muslim. That is, he should be aware of the belief of Tauheed, Adl, Naboovat, Imamat, Resurrection, creation, etc. He should be able to establish and prove these beliefs on the basis of his intellect and wisdom granted to him by Allah and not indulge in blind imitation.

(25)

Fundamentals of Religion (Furu' al-Deen):

After a person is convinced about his beliefs, it is necessary for him to act upon the commands and prohibitions of His Creator and His holy proofs (A.S.). Imam Sadeq (A.S.) was asked about the knowledge that has been made obligatory in the tradition of the Messenger of Islam (S.A.W.A.). He (A.S.) replied, "It is the knowledge of piety and certainty."

Allama Majlisi (A.R.) writes, "The knowledge of piety is the knowledge about the commands, prohibitions and responsibilities, by which a person is saved from the punishment of Allah. And the knowledge of certainty is the recognition of the principles of religion."

Houzutul Imamul Qayam (A.S.) in its endeavour are inciting the above teaching of Islamic ideals and have emphasis on skills, creativities, positive and rational thinking strictly in accordance to the Islamic Sharia and principles, thereafter meriting the pupils in to Aalim-e-Din(Religious Scholar) who would later on take up task of teachings Islamic ideals world wide.

an institue which has prominent places in their warm heart. The Holy Quran has clearly laid down priorities in the matter of charities "They ask thee (O Mohammed) what they shall spend; say : That which you spend for good (must go) to parents and near kindred and the way-farer. And whatever good ye do, Allah is aware of it". (Ch.2. v.215) Imam Husain (a.s.) used to give chairty by standing behind the door so that the recipient should not feel ashamed of receiving the charity. Imam Zainul-Abedin (a.s.) used to kiss the hand of the man to whom He (a.s.) gave charity by saying that it represented the hand of Allah as stated in Ch.9, V.104, : " Know they not that Allah do accept repentance from his votaries and receives their gifts of chairty".

The words cannot match or described the deeds and performance of our merciful Benefactors and Donors, we all pray for their maghferat " O Lord grand them the love of thee, grant them that they may love those that love thee, grant them thee abundance of mercy and bounty that they do more and more noble dees and may win thy love, make thy love to be dearer to them and all of us then self, family or than wealth, and Allah keep them and us safe from all calamities, and make place for them and their Dears one in the highest place and rank of paradise. Ilahi Ameen
